Magnetising Equipment

At MSS we do the majority of our magnetising here on site. We have made substantial investment in capacitor discharge magnetising equipment. This enables us to magnetise to the exact specification of our customers. We can also demagnetise parts in order to take them apart and inspect, clean and overhaul them.

 

Each type of magnetic material requires a different minimum magnetic field to become saturated and remain magnetic after the applied field is removed. For example, the most easily magnetised material is cast alcomax, which requires only 0.3 Tesla to become magnetic. On the other hand, Samarium Cobalt is much tougher to magnetise, requiring a 5 Tesla field.

These machines work by charging a large capacitor and quickly releasing the stored charge through a copper wound coil, thus generating a magnetic field. When magnetising, the field is determined by the energy released during the capacitor discharge, the diameter of the copper coil and the number of turns on the copper coil. Higher discharge energy, smaller diameter coils (smaller air gap) and more turns on the coil all contribute to produce a greater field.

We have two capacitor discharge machines, one with a 10 kJ output and one with a 15 kJ output, as well as a comprehensive range of copper coils. This allows us to taylor the field to the required level for a given size of a particular material. Output voltage can be varied from zero up to 3000 V, producing a peak current of 35000 A within the copper coil. Magnetic fields of up to 5.5 Tesla can be produced, enabling us to magnetise the toughest of magnetic materials.
